On the Kurtosis of Modulation Formats for Characterizing the Nonlinear Fiber Propagation

Knowing only two high-order statistical moments of modulation symbols, often represented by the fourth moment called “kurtosis”, overestimation nonlinear interference (NLI) in a Gaussian noise (GN) model due to signaling assumption can be corrected through an enhanced GN (EGN) model. However, some modern optical communication systems where transmitted symbols are statistically correlated, such as that use probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) with finite-length sphere shaping, kurtosis-based EGN produces significant inaccuracies analytical prediction NLI. In this paper, we show for correlated NLI more accurately estimated substituting measure windowed kurtosis into model, instead conventional kurtosis. Remarkably, optimal window length is found consistent self-phase (SPM) and cross-phase (XPM) characteristic times various system configurations. The findings used practice analytically evaluate design NLI-tolerant formats.
